Dec 22 2009 Crossing Barrier Damaged Again
New Wortley has endured a consistent amount of Anti Social Behaviour by motorists who ignore the 24hr bus lane ,especially at peak time. Excessive speeds ,ignoring red traffic lights and constant rat running by motorists who are intent on queue jumping by any means they deem appropriate and certainly not within the law ,is rampant at peak time. These motorists should be treated like joy riders and dealt with appropriately. They seem to have no respect for traffic regulations at all.Highways emailed 22nd December 2009 to request repair.
Dec 8 2009 New Wortley Community Centre..sponsors urgently needed.
Sponsors Urgently Needed Please help to Narrow the Gap. http://www.newwortleycommunitycentre.btik.com
The Community Centre provides a vital resource and funding is urgently needed.New Wortley is located on the edge of Leeds City Centre.Whilst the City Centre has seen dramatic improvements withMillions of Pounds spent ,New Wortley has continued to spiral into further decline and is one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the Country.Residents themselves have been working hard to improve the area in the wake of the Community Plan although progress is slow.Whilst some improvements have been done they have been on a ad hoc basis with no overall visible change .As well as residents there are a lot of agencies working to improve the area ,this cannot be achieved without a firm commitment of both secure funding and better coordination.
Nov 9 2009 Bin Strike update
Some of the refuse bins have still not been emptied on the New Wortley Estate and
we have again contacted LCC to try and clarify the situation.
Some residents appear not to have had their bins emptied at all since the start of the strike.
We have had reports that residents in other areas have had more frequent collections.
Once again it seems that New Wortley is at the end of the queue !!!!!

Bins Emptied Tuesday 10th November.
Wednesday, October 21, 2009 Thank you for your email. Streetscene Services, along with private contractors, have been working hard over the last two weeks to catch up with collecting the backlog of bins that had not had a collection since the start of the industrial action. These efforts have been largely successful and we trust that you have now had at least one collection. In addition, we now have sufficient resource to arrange for your bins to be collected onan alternate weekly basis. The revised collection details are available on the " search for your bin days " page on the council website The contractors will make every effort to collect on the normal scheduled day of the week. However , because of the volume of waste, they may not be able to collect on the usual collection day. In the mean time, please ensure your bins are not causing any obstruction to pedestrians. For further information about this action and to check the latest advice and information.
Nov 6 2009 Brick Thrown at Bus from local bridge !
Thursday, November 5, 2009North West Leeds police are appealing for information after a brick was thrown at a bus travelling through Armley last night. At about 8.30pm a double decker First bus was travelling along Armley Road towards the city when one of a group of about 15 youths threw a brick from a footbridge, which is near to the prison in Gloucester Terrace. The brick smashed into the glass-fronted destination matrix on the front of the bus causing considerable damage.Sergeant Joe Westerman said: "We are treating this incident very seriously. The brick could have very easily gone through the windscreen or upstairs windows and seriously injured the driver or passengers. Thankfully no-one was hurt although the occupants of the bus were left very shaken and upset. We would urge anyone who saw the youths in the area or who knows who is responsible to get in touch."Anyone with any information is asked to contact the West Inner Neighourhood Policing Team on 0113 241 4888 or via 0845 6060606 or contact Crimestoppers, anonymously and in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
Oct 23 2009 Phonecalls Scam Leeds
People in Leeds are being warned about a telephone scam where fraudsters are targeting
elderly people for their bank details.
Energy company npower alerted North West Leeds police today (22/10) after people in the
Leeds 13 area contacted the firm about telephone calls they had received. The bogus callers had claimed they were ringing on behalf of npower and could reduce electricity
bills for the over-70s in a government-approved scheme. They said they needed to take their bank
details to do this.
Inspector Mark Bownass, of the West Inner Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "This has clearly
been an attempt to get hold of people's bank details to commit fraud and we would advise people
never to give out such sensitive information. The company has assured us that it does not do
business in this way and we would advise anyone who receives such a call not to
part with any information and to contact the company named via their main switchboard number
in the
phonebook or on their website."
Anyone who receives such a call should also contact their local police via 0845 6060606.
Oct 19 2009 Bin Strike Update Leeds City Council.
Refuse Collections/Bin Strike.
NWAG. An initial email was sent on the 6th October 2009 to Leeds City Council.
The response to this was recieved today. We know many residents will not be totally
happy with the situation and rightly so.We ask all residents to report any problems
with rats etc to LCC.We will continue to monitor the situation.
Response
Streetscene Services, along with private contractors, have been working hard over the
last two weeks to catch up with collecting the backlog of bins that had not had a collection
since the start of the industrial action.
These efforts have been largely successful, however, we are aware that some customers
have not yet had a collection and I will request a priority collection for the New Wortley Estate.
I understand the frustration this situation may cause so your patience is appreciated at this time.
Regarding possible rebates , council tax refunds will not be available to Leeds residents
during this period of industrial action. We have a duty to provide a service to Leeds residents
and that is what we are doing, albeit one that is disrupted and below the level we would usually
want to provide.
Residents can also use Leeds' network of household waste sorting sites and bring banks
to dispose of any excess waste or recycling during this period. We are sorry for the disruption
in normal service and we hope to see an improving situation over the coming days by arranging
as many collection and street cleaning services as we can.

Oct 5 2009 T Block Refurbishment Clyde Walk
Refurbishment of the retained T block on Clyde Walk is underway .More puzzling is that some residents have commented that the roof does not appear to have been repaired before internal work commenced.….Do you know different ? , let us know your view WNWHL have assured us that the missing ridge and roof tiles are not allowing any rain water penetration to the inside of the block and that the necessary roofing work will be carried out over the next couple of weeks....

Rachel Reeves, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate
Working Hard for Leeds West.
http://www.rachelreeves.net/index.html
Dear Friends,
Congratultaions
First, a big congratulations to all students who got their A level results today,
and good luck to everyone waiting for GCSE results. And congratulations and
thank you to teachers, parents and others who supported our young people in
the run up to their exams.
Summer Round Up
The Kirkstall Festival, I love West Leeds programme, Bramley Carnival and Armley
Moor Fun Day all got summer off to a flying start. And, for the last few weeks Kirkstall
Abbey has been home for the British Shakespeare Company, with productions of Much
Ado About Nothing and A Midsummer’s Nights Dream.
Cycling for Cancer
Thank you for all the words of support and sponsorship for the coast to coast cycle ride
to raise money for mouth cancer which I took part in. The event raised money for research
and support for sufferers of mouth cancer and I pay particular tribute to Bramley resident,
Rebecca Brady, who organised the event and have fund-raised tirelessly for Brenda Brady
who tragically died from mouth cancer last year.
Backing the NHS
Having lived in the US, I am only too aware of the huge health inequalities in that country.
Nearly fifty million people have no health insurance and being ill can bankrupt you – or
worse, deny you treatment that could make you better.
I have seen first-hand the difference the NHS makes, caring for my grandparents and for
my cousin who was born with a hole in her heart. The NHS is there for us, and our families,
in times of need. I have been impressed by the rallying support of the British people, getting
behind our NHS. I added my support to “#welovethenhs” on Twitter and on facebook.
The debate has made me even more proud to be standing in Leeds West for Labour,
the party that created the NHS.
Coming up
There are a number of summer events going on in Leeds West – the opening of the
Broadleas Garden at the Community Centre on Friday afternoon, the Hillside Fayre
in New Farnley on Saturday and Bramley Buffaloes are playing at home on Sunday.
As we go in to the new school year two new schools open – Leeds West Academy to
replace Intake and Swallow Hill Community College, the merger of West Leeds and
Wortley High Schools. Huge investment in our young people, and exciting opportunities
for our area.
The Kirkstall Forum takes place on 8th Sept at 7pm at the community building on
Haddon Road, where we will be voicing our concerns about building a waste transfer site in
Kirkstall. The Armley Forum is takes place on 15th Sept at the One Stop Centre..
I hope to see you at some of the things going in Leeds West.
Best wishes
Rachel

Jun 17 2009 Getting it right, and righting the wrongs.
Published 17th June 2009
Key findings
Customers need clear explicit promises or pledges of the standards they can expect
and what will happen if things go wrong.
(These should be transparent, simple, timely, easy and flexible)
Frontline staff are the key to the delivery of excellent services;
Partnerships need to be customer-focused as well as considering the benefits
for partners;
Evidence shows that people are primarily interested in an apology and acknowledgement
of the problem, and then their problem being put right, rather than monetary compensation;
What was needed was an easy, practical tool for local authorities and partners to be able to
apply all of the learning that is already out there;
There are other tools and guidance documents which can then help councils and their partners
in considering a route to further improvement, such as mystery shopping tools and the Customer
Service Standard and the Improvement and Development Agency

Jan 26 2009 The Land That Time Forgot
The Land That Time Forgot /or the Gassy Field as named by local residents.
Is this land contaminated ?
The common myth is that the gassy field site is contaminated.
his land had houses on it was not part of the Leeds Municipal Gas Works.
The bottom end of Bruce lawn (Wellington Road) would have been approximately where Wallace Street was before the slum clearance of the late 1950s.After Wallace Street towards the city centre was Holdforth Street, Prince Street, Campbell Street and Langham Street all theses had numerous smaller offshoots .The blue print for the area shows that the contaminated land falls within The Centrica site and the far side of the gyratory.
he gas holder that is there today is not one of the original 4 gas holders, estimates put its origin in the mid 1960s.
Ponder this! If the above is incorrect our children have all played on this land.
Jan 12 2009 Window And Door Replacements-Back on Track
Window and door replacement scheme reinstated on the
New Wortley Estate .
We are now 3 years on from January 2006 when the scheme was originally put on hold.
It remains to be seen if the scheme will upgrade all windows and doors on the estate or will it be the case of only replacing what is basically falling to bits.
Have we turned the corner or are we still being led up the garden path?
