Thousands of Empty Homes ! CALL FOR ACTION AS 141,060 EMPTY HOMES DISCOVERED IN NORTH WEST

To mark National Empty Homes Week of Action (November 23-29), independent charity, The Empty Homes Agency is calling on the public to report run-down empty homes to help bring them back into use.  EHA Chief Executive, David Ireland said: "At the very time people need more homes, record numbers are falling empty.  "There are now enough vacant homes in England to house almost two million people yet far more attention is paid to building new ones. Councils have the power to step in and help, but can't do so unless they know where they are and won't unless they know people care."  The Empty Homes Agency has launched a new website Report Empty Homes to make it as easy as possible for people to report empty homes that are affecting them.

The website will automatically report the property to the person in the council who can take action and will provide updates until the property is back in use.  "If everybody who is affected by this growing problem reported just one empty home it would provide a huge impetus and send a huge message to government and councils that action is needed now," said Mr Ireland.

Dec 3 2008  Support Letter From Local Councillors to ResidentsSupport  from Local Councillors J Harper A Lowe & J McKenna

In mid November Tenants on the estate were sent a letter from their local councillors. All Tenants on this estate want is to be treated fairly..The Avenues which is in New Wortley (and adjacent to our estate) have had full rewires bathrooms kitchens windows doors etc across the board. Considering the Avenues were built approx 10years later this is grossly unfair and unacceptable.

We were totally ignored some years ago when we were put in the City and Holbeck Ward, some things never change. Long term residents get the worst deal, new tenants in the main receive full refurbishment to the property before they move in.As a matter of interest the Clyde’s, Bruce’s ,Holdforth’s etc were built towards the end of the 1960s to early 1970s.

Nov 18 2008  Update Decency Works.Strange but True

As all tenants will be aware the planned work was put on hold again. This as you will also know was to be reviewed in December. Why then would WNWLH employ painters to paint windows and doors and other items that clearly need replacing  ? Is this once again false economy ?. Let us know your views.

Nov 13 2008  Housing Shortage

The Hawthorn’s ..This was originally the site of Children’s Home and was later converted into flats. This site has also been derelict for years. However some other blocks of flats on the estate have quite recently been brought back into circulation.

These images depict views that residents have had to endure as the estate fell into disrepair and yes we do care!Do You?,Numerous more flats on the New Wortley Estatehave been left empty for a considerable time. Not Months but for Years!

Nov 5 2008   Crossing Update

We were very pleased that Leed City Councils Urban Traffic Department replaced the damaged traffic light within a few days.We are hoping that the damaged barrier will be replaced as soon as possible.

Oct 29 2008   Decency Works Shelved Again !

All council Tenants on the New Wortley estate should now be aware that once again decency works have been put on hold. As yet we have been unable to verify exactly why. We had no idea that this was going to happen until tenants received their letters. There also seems to be small discrepancies. It was originally anticipated that the start date would be September 2008 and be completed by January 2009.
